Starting your journey into motorcycling is exciting, but if you’re new to it all, your first day of CBT Compulsory Basic Training can also feel a bit nerve-wracking. First of all, don’t worry, CBT isn’t a test, and you’re not expected to arrive as a confident rider. In fact, the entire purpose of the course is to help you build safe riding habits from the ground up.
If you’re wondering what to expect, here’s a breakdown of what your first day typically involves.
Your day will begin with a warm welcome from your instructor and a short introduction to the structure of the course. You’ll go over important safety information, your responsibilities as a rider, and what the day will look like.
No prior knowledge is needed, this is where you’ll start learning everything step by step.
Next, you’ll be introduced to the motorbike or scooter you’ll be using. You’ll learn how to carry out basic safety checks and understand the controls, throttle, clutch, brakes, gears, indicators, and so on.
Don’t worry if you’ve never sat on a bike before, your instructor will walk you through it patiently.
Before you head anywhere near public roads, you’ll spend time in a safe, controlled area learning how to ride. You’ll practise moving off, stopping safely, using the gears (if applicable), performing figure-of-eights, and developing clutch control.
This part of the day is all about building confidence and mastering the fundamentals.
Once you’ve shown that you’re safe and competent off-road, it’s time for the final part: at least two hours of supervised road riding. You’ll be riding with an instructor, via radio, who will guide you through various road types and traffic situations.
This experience helps prepare you for real-world riding and is a great confidence booster.
At the end of the day, if your instructor is confident that you’re safe and ready, you’ll receive your CBT certificate (DL196), valid for two years. If you need a bit more time or practice, don’t worry. CBT is about learning, not passing or failing, and additional training can be arranged.
